  1. ESCORT B-17S TO WILHEMSHAVEN
  2.  
  3. On November 3, 1943, shortly after the 
  4. 55th Fighter Group had gone operational, 
  5. the P-38s were called upon to cover the 
  6. 40th Bomb Wing over Wilhemshaven.  
  7. The trip to the target was uneventful, but 
  8. as the bombers headed home, the P-38s 
  9. were caught off guard by an aggressive 
  10. unit of Bf 109s diving out of the sun.  Some 
  11. of the Luftwaffe fighters attacked the 
  12. bombers, while others attacked the P-38s.  
  13.  
  14. One Bf 109 attacked Lt. Robert Buttke's 
  15. wingman, and Buttke went into a near 
  16. vertical dive to help him.  After pulling out 
  17. at 14,000 feet, Buttke put a long burst into 
  18. the enemy fighter, knocking its tail off and 
  19. forcing its pilot to bail out.  Lt. Buttke 
  20. climbed back up to 25,000 feet to rejoin 
  21. the bombers, where he shot down another 
  22. Bf 109 from 300 yards.

  24. Lt. Col. Jack Jenkins also scored a kill, to 
  25. give the 55th their first three victories.  If 
  26. the Lightning pilots hadn't been under 
  27. strict orders to stay with the bombers, they 
  28. might have racked up even more bogies.

  30.                     YOUR MISSION
  31.  
  32. You and your wingman are to fly escort 
  33. for a formation of B-17s as they approach 
  34. their target area over Wilhemshaven.  
  35. Once the bombers have completed their 
  36. run, stay with them until they reach the 
  37. English coast.
  38.  
  39. Watch the entire sky for Luftwaffe 
  40. interceptors, and keep them away from 
  41. the bombers.  But remember, you are to 
  42. stick with the bombers at all costs!
